But how did people celebrate Christmas before the advent of shopping malls and electric lights? What’s the history behind the tradition? At its core, Christmas is a celebration of the birth of Jesus. The holiday’s connection to Christ is obvious through its Old English root of “Cristes maesse” or Christ’s Mass. For Christians, it is the time to renew one’s faith, give generously and consider the past. christian louboutin outlet online http://www.cheaplouboutinworld.com/

  31. ehelms says... April 19, 2012 | 7:08am

As I understand this tragic story, Capt. Edward Perrin was in command of the Star Princess at the time…NOT Capt. Kent.

    • Carl says... April 19, 2012 | 7:23am

So who was in command of the Star on March 10, 2012? I am following this story very closely as we are currently booked to sail on the Star for a 15 day Hawaii cruise in Nov 2012 and I want to make sure that the captain is not the same guy.

    • ehelms says... April 19, 2012 | 7:53am

Cruise Law News reports that Capt. Edward Perrin was at the helm of the Star Princess. My husband and I sailed with Capt. Kent last summer, and I was relieved to see he wasn’t involved.
      http://www.cruiselawnews.com/2012/04/articles/rescue-1/two-dead-fishermen-did-star-princess-cruise-ship-ignore-mariners-in-distress/

    • Bob Loewer says... April 19, 2012 | 10:42am

My apologies to Captain Kent, if he was not the captain in question. I was unable to verify who was captain on that particular cruise and accepted the earlier consumer data as accurate. I will assume Cruise Law News is an acceptable authority. My bad. Great Caesar’s Ghost.

    • Carl says... April 19, 2012 | 10:46am

Thanks ehelms. I hope they take Captain Perrin out of command rotation pending completion of this investigation. This story is now moving like wild fire across the planet and I don’t think most of the the cruising public would want to sail with him at this point.

    • ehelms says... April 19, 2012 | 1:01pm

Glad to help clarify. During our cruise last year, Capt. Kent kept the passengers informed and entertained..I would not hesitate to sail with him again. I just wish he’d been in command on March 10…I think the story would have had ended differently.

    • Carl says... April 23, 2012 | 5:51am

I received an e-mail from Princess Friday stating that the initial results of their internal investigation had determined that neither Capt. Perrin or the duty watch officer had been informed of the stranded fishermen. The tone was that everything is “OK” since the senior officers were not directly involved in this tragedy. While that is a small bit of good news, Princess must now look at existing procedures governing “life vital” communications within the crew to determine why this “communication breakdown” occurred. If the procedures in place at that time are determined to be adequate if they had been followed, then they must determine who on the crew failed to follow the procedures and why- lack of training? Lack of attention to job detail? Lazy? Bottom line- even if the command officers did not make a conscious decision to not render aid, the fact remains that two men are still dead and some part of the ship’s human performance system failed. This failure must be corrected & verified and then shared with the balance of the Princess fleet & the rest of the cruise industry. Two tragic and unnecessary deaths are not acceptable.

  32. Panamanian says... April 17, 2012 | 7:19am

Cap Kent because it rescued the shipwrecked Panamanians. You have no heart.
    http://www.panama-guide.com/article.php/20120413184536993

    • Bob Loewer says... April 19, 2012 | 6:06am

Your comment is meant to call attention to the fact that Captain Kent ignored maritime law by *not* stopping to rescue the passengers in obvious distress on the Panamanian vessel. As a result of his conduct, people on the stricken ship subsequently died. As of now, he is under investigation.

In the future, I will avoid sailing on any ship in which he is the captain.

My wife and I have had the pleasure of sailing with Captain Kent on 3 occassions. First on the Sea Princess in 2006 and most recently on the Star Princess on a 18 day TransAtlantic in 2010 and again in 2011 in the Med from Venice to the Greek Isles. Captain Kent is both very accessable and professional and we both enjoy his no nonsence policy with both crew and passengers when it comes to all back on board times. We always appreciate his wonderful sense of humor as well as his departure announcements which I look forward to daily. We have sailed with Princess 9 times and hopefully our paths will cross with Captain Kent again. He has always played a substantial role in the enjoyment of our cruise.

  34. Milady Elaine Travis says... March 6, 2012 | 12:04pm

I have just read Captain Kent’s charming recounts of Istanbul. I was transported there via his wonderful words and memories. This, too, is a city that I have always wanted to visit and hope that I will someday soon. Six of my traveling pals and I are going to England, Ireland, and Scotland in August 2012, so we are slowly making our way there. We try to make a cruise at least every other year if not yearly…so it is conceivable we will visit Istanbul sooner than later! I have truly enjoyed knowing of your travels. You are a fortunate gentleman. I would love to sail under your command and I look forward to that pleasure.

We also had the privilege of sailing with Capt. Kent on the the Tahitian Princess (now the Ocean Princess) on the Fire and Ice 36 Day Cruise from New York to Dover and Dover back to New York in August of 2009.This was without a doubt our best voyage on a Princess ship to date. We especially liked the small, more intimate size of the small Princess Criuise ship. Capt. Kent brought us into and out of ports in Iceland and Greenland with style and precision, and we never had a doubt that he was in command of the situation. This included going into and out of port in Qaqortoq, Greenland while watching iceburgs. We also had an amazing day saling through Prin Christian Sund with 8-hours of beautiful sunny weather while sailing through the narrow passage past massive glaciers, sharp peaks and amazing glacier valleys that truely rival those anywhere in the world. It could not have been a better experience which was made comfortable by sailing with Capt. Kent. Thank you Sir!

We had the privilege of Capt. Kent being our Captian on the Fire and Ice 36 Day Cruise from New York to Dover and Dover back to New York three years ago in August. We had a great voyage on the Tahitian Princess. He did a wonderful job with our ship when we were coming back to New York and had the bout with the high seas. Do you remember Captain Kent. Thanks for the great voyage to Greenland, Iceland and beyond.

  37. Chris Wicks says... April 1, 2011 | 11:13am

Going on our first Princess Cruise in June round the UK & Iceland. Strangely enough Captain Kent lives about 2 miles from my village of Kirton, nr Boston Lincs. I wonder if he frequents The Moores Arms pub in Frampton when he is home on leave!!

    • Bill Kent says... October 12, 2011 | 4:05am

      I most certainly do!

  38. Russell says... March 25, 2011 | 7:53pm

We’re happy to see Capt. Kent is still with Princess. We did the Canada-New England cruise with him on old Regal Princess in 2004 and found him to be approachable, friendly and courteous.

  39. A. J. Graham says... March 24, 2011 | 7:36pm

Looking forward to sailing with Captain Kent and his excellent staff in a few weeks.

  40. Cheryl Malotky says... March 24, 2011 | 1:13pm

We have sailed several times on several different ships but our experience with Captain Kent on our Greek Isles cruise late last October/early November was the best. His sense of humor kept us entertained and smiling the entire trip. We looked forward to daily updates from the bridge. Would love to sail with him again.

  41. Glenis Singleton says... March 24, 2011 | 1:03pm

We have also just returned from a trip on the Star Princess around South America. We could not praise the ship and staff enough. Captain Kent’s tea time summary was also informative and funny. We hope we can travel with him as the captain some time in the future.

  42. hazel says... March 23, 2011 | 4:08pm

Sailed with Captain Kent around South America last month and i can say that this cruise was one of the best cruises we have ever had. All the staff were wonderful, friendly and helpful, the ship and facilities were excellent, the destinations awesome making this holiday a wonderful experience

  43. Brian Case says... March 23, 2011 | 3:47am

We recently had the pleasure of Captain Kent and the rest of the ships team on our trip down to Antarctica (January 2011) on board Star Princess, we were both first time cruisers and feel we could not have picked a better destination for our first cruise. Captain Kent was brilliant and funny in his captain’s speech but I am sure all the Americans were lost at his cricket jokes!

Not sure I agree with his comment on his steak in Montevideo though, I had one in Buenos Aires and that took some beating, may need another trip to double check.

Who ever meets Captain Kent on his re-positioning to the Caribbean are in for a treat.

Fascinating story, Capt. Kent, especially your recounting of boyhood heist re-enactment – Very funny! I wish we had known of your affinity for Istanbul when you married us on the Star Princess in December 2009. (You’ll remember me as the non-stop giggling bride.) Calvin and I took our first cruise together on the Ageaen and spent three lovely days afterward in Istanbul in 2007. It would have been fun to compare notes with you. We found the Grand Bazaar a bit overwhelming so we brought home a blue glass hanging lantern that we found in a cigarette shop on Istiklal Kadesi. We will always remember Topkapi Palace. We also have not been to the Maiden Tower, so we would love to read your travelogue when you finally get the opportunity.
