What item is in your suitcase that you couldn’t travel without?
A rather mundane item, a manicure set (with tweezers). This one was given to me as a high school graduation gift by some close friends of the family. It has often come in handy and has always reminded me of these dear friends.
What’s your most treasured travel souvenir?
Maps. I have maps from cities and countries all over the world, some with markings and notes made as we travelled. I find these provide some of the best memories from my travels.
What’s the most memorable dish you’ve eaten during your travels?
When travelling in China with a group in the early 80’s we had some very unusual dinners. For the most part, dishes with meat were rare. After a period of longing for meat, a large platter arrived at dinner full of what looked to be cubes of lean pork. As we scrambled to take our share of the dish we discovered it was, in fact, grey tofu.
What’s your travel motto?
Be flexible with your expectations, be open to opportunities to meet people and enjoy activities as they come your way. If you fret too much about being on schedule, you might miss the experience of a lifetime.
Where haven’t you been that’s on your travel bucket list?
South America, Argentina and Chile, in particular – as well as sailing around Cape Horn.
