I always knew that my husband, an automobile mechanic, would be eager to visit the Panama Canal, a masterpiece of engineering and one of the so-called Seven Wonders of the Modern World. Before we had our three sons, Steven and I were in the habit of taking holiday-season cruises together, so when the opportunity arose to book a cruise to Panama, with stops in Colombia, Costa Rica and parts of the Caribbean, we took it. The year was 1997.
In a way, I thought of it as my gift to him, but it turned out to be one of the travel experiences I remember most. I did not expect to be so fascinated by the intricate series of locks and gates that make up the Panama Canal and equally as touched by some children I met on one of the San Blas islands there. Truly, Panama was a revelation to me.
I had read in school about the long and arduous history of man’s quest to join the Pacific and Atlantic via the narrow, 40-mile-wide Isthmus of Panama. I must have imagined that the Panama Canal would be a trench-like passageway, a muddy river of sorts, connecting the two oceans.
I had seen a documentary recapping the punishing, dangerous and seemingly impossible work entailed in cutting through a mountain range and even a portion of the Continental Divide, hacking through dense jungle, navigating the tides of the powerful Chagres River and battling mosquitoes that brought the devastation of yellow fever and malaria with them.
This was man vs. nature at its fiercest. It was a Herculean odyssey that defeated the initial team of investors from France and challenged the Americans who ultimately completed the canal.
As hard as it was to reconcile the efficient system in place today with the chaos and hardship of a century ago, the knowledge about the building of the canal is what makes it such an enriching experience.
We boarded Crown Princess in Fort Lauderdale, and after a few days at sea we arrived at the Panama Canal. It was a little surreal, because Steven and I were hanging out by the side of the pool, in complete vacation mode, as our ship entered the first of the three Gatun Locks. Excitedly, we made our way to the railing to get a closer look at what was happening.
Crown Princess entered what looked like a giant pool that then filled with water; you could see the gates open and the water pour in. As we rose to reach the next level of the Canal, the gates opened and our ship eased into the next lock, where the process was repeated once again. It was like being in an elevator. I was amazed at the efficiency of the whole transaction and I could sense Steven was in complete awe of this mechanical masterpiece.
Large ships are not allowed to power through the locks themselves. Instead, they are towed by electric locomotives, or “mules.”
After the third lock, Crown Princess had been lifted 85 feet above sea level to reach Gatun Lake. At Gatun Lake, our ship reversed course and we went back through the same portion of the canal, back toward the Caribbean. Had we continued on to the Pacific, the whole process could have taken the better part of 10 hours, depending on ship traffic.
From there, we stopped by one of the islands in Panama’s San Blas Archipelago. The San Blas islands are run by the Kuna Indians and their economy, language, specific culture and customs thrive there. Besides the fact that the particular island we visited had a breathtaking beach, what captured my heart were the children who flocked to meet us after we docked.
I did not expect to be reminded of my own childhood on a tiny island in San Blas. This trip was turning out to be full of surprises. As the children of San Blas ran up to us selling beaded necklaces, shell jewelry and sweet little wooden boats that they had made, my mind flashed back to my own childhood in Trinidad and Tobago.
You could say finances were tight…we were poor. In an attempt to have a little extra, my mother used to make candy and sell it at my school during recess. I was not embarrassed at all, in fact, I’d always join her in selling sweets to my friends. You do what you have to do.
But when you are a child, you feel you’re the only kid in the world who has to work this way. Here in a remote island of San Blas, I was reminded that there are needy children all over, in every part of the world, who do what they can to provide for their families. I was truly touched beyond belief.
I came home thinking of the endearing nature of the children of San Blas and the mechanical marvels of the Panama Canal.
This was a trip that satisfied both Steven and me, and one of our last together before we started our family. It’s been 14 years since we went to Panama and now we have three boys: James, 12, Michael, almost 11, and Nicholas, 7. Vacations are no longer romantic breaks for two…we travel as a pack.
I just know that we’ll be back to Panama before long, where our sons—one shows signs of becoming an engineer—will be amazed to see this wonder of technology and perhaps meet a few children who are a lot like their mom used to be.

Anyone going on the cruise Nov. 9. 2011 on Island Princess to Panama?
They have a German Show on board, which you have to have special reservations for. We can’t wait for the cruise and seeing the “Schaefer” group.
We are looking forward to our trip thru the Canal. My grandfather was an engineer on the construction. That was many years ago. The memories I have are original photos taken when he worked there. Grandma & Grandpa raised my mother there before she came to the states for college….I am counting down until March.
loved your story Ophelia as well as all the comments from others who have traveled the panamal canal. My husband and I and another couple are taking the cruise on March 28th next year and after reading all the comments I am more excited than ever. The only thing we are dealing with now is decided which tours to take.
I am anxiously awaiting my upcoming cruise through the panama canal. I am a retired electrical engineer. I have read Pathway to the Sea and Panama Cruise Guide 2011. I am a bit disappointed because after speaking with Princess, they will not have a naturalist or even a general tour guide on board, as we transit the canal. I really wish Princess would reconsider as this would enhance the transit experience immensely.
We went did the Panama Canal trip last May 2011 as the Sea Princess was repositioning for the Alaskan route from Fort Lauderdale to San Francisco. They had a tour guide on board that provided us with many interesting details of the canal during the entire transit.
this will be our first Princess cruise on the 9th of Dec enjoyed all the other cruise lines we have been on looking forward to this one too
My sister and I are taking te Panama Cruise from LA to Ft Laud next March on the Princess Coral. Can’t wait. Was on the Coral last year for our Alaska Cruise, so we should know our way around.
Great story Ophelia, My husband and I along with our vacation buddies will be traveling to Panama in 2112. We cannot wait as this is a life long vacation that we have always wanted to experience. We will set sail on one of the Princess Cruise Lines and hope that it will be worth every dime that was spent. Thank you for sharing such a dynamic story for all to read.
I just have to commend you for planning ahead by 101 years. At least it gives you time to budget for the cruise. Even the fact that you plan on being alive in 101 years is amazing.
Enjoy your cruise. It is unfortunate that I don’t think I will be around in 2112 to hear about it!
Please send us price details, trip length etc.

Dear Ophelia:
Your story really touched my heart. It was sort of like reading a best selling mini romance novel.
Time has past quickly for you since that time in 1997, when those fond memories were created. Now your the proud mother of three, with one son showing an interest in engineering as well.
I hope you and your family go back there…………….you,ve got to, thats all, there,s something calling you back there. You,ve got to see those children of San Blas again!
Next time your children need to marvell at the magnificance of the canal too, and to see their mothers face in that of a small child of San Blas Hopefully at that time you will be adding another beautiful chapter to this captivating and heart warming story.
You have ignited some enthusiasm in me, as I am taking the cruise on the Islander in February , with my elderly father 82, and our friend 78. My father picked this trip. He,s another one that realy marveles at the wonders of technology. And, I am trying to give him reasons to “keep going”, so to speak. But, I think, after reading your story, just like you, there just might be a little something in this for me too. And maybe, I should take a little something for children, incase I encounter some of which you described.
Thank-you Ophelia
Would like to communicate with anyone taking the December 6th Coral Princess sailing through the Panama Canal from Fort Lauderdale to LA.
Hi Suzy,
I too am taking the December 6th Coral Princess cruise from Fort Lauderdale and would be interested in communicating with you. But how do we do that? Any ideas. Like me, you are probably reluctant to give out contact details so readily.
The descriptions that have been posted about the Panama Canal Cruise have been so exciting We can’t hardly wait for our cruise to depart on Octber 30. See you aboard
We are leaving for Panama Canal cruise on October 30th . After reading all these comments we can wait to go aboard. Princess is really the best
My husband and parents (age 81) are on the Island Princess on October 30. This is one of my dad’s bucket list items. Three years ago the four of us were on Island Princess up in Alaska (mom’s choice). Looking forward to the Panama Canal cruise. Currently reading “The Path between the Seas” which is the history of the making of the canal. Enjoyed reading Ophelia experience.
Too expensive
my husband and I are taking the cruise from L.A. this October first time on Coral Princess and would like to know what land tours are recommended? My husband is also a model railroader. Anyone going in October from L.A.?
Went through the Canal last October on HAL and so enjoyed it that we are going R/T LA leaving October 25th. Noticed that although the Coral Princess follows the same route as HAL, they make few stops. Eg: no visits to Panama City and stops in Cabo are very time limited. Really not much time for touring.
Hi Sylvia,
We look forward to welcoming you onboard!
Some of our most popular excursions are: Aruba is “Island Highlights & Beach”, Cartagena “Highlights of Cartagena, Fortress & Las Bovedas”, Puntarenas “Rainforest Aerial Tram, Tarcoles River & Lunch”.
On our Cruise Personalizer the shore excursions can be filtered according to your interests (site seeing, activity/ adventure etc.). The Most Popular badge will identify those excursions most often picked by our sailed passengers. To access the Cruise Personalizer please use the following link: https://book.princess.com/cruisepersonalizer/login.page?company=PC
We look forward to welcoming you onboard!

My husband and I are cruising from LA this October. This is our first cruise and would welcome any information about the land tours.
can,t wait to go this January !!!!!
in 1942 while in the U.S.Navy Armed Guard as Gunner on Merchant Ship we wnnt to the
Panama Canal,Iwant to vivit again to see how it has changed
Great story Ophelia. We did the R/T Ft Lauderdale to the Canal on Princess in Jan 2011 and totally enjoyed it. Reading your story brought back many memories of the trip. The other stops on the cruise were also fantastic. What a nice package Princess put together for the 10 day cruise. Thank you for sharing your experiences and thank you Princess for putting together cruises, destinations and experiences we ‘sailors’ can all enjoy and look forward to..
We are sailing on the Coral Princess on the 22 Nov from LA and looking for other passengers on this trip. When we stop in Costa Rica we are booking a 7 hour trip thru Odessey tours but would like four other people to make 6 in total, the number required for the trip to Carara park, santa Lucia village, Puntarenas, Orotina town, and Punta Leona beach, only 1 hour drive each way is needed with plenty of room and comfortable seats for 6 people going private.
We are on this same cruise and might be interested in joining you, but this type of request belongs on a Roll Call message board at Princess or CruiseCritic. I am reluctant to post any contact info here. Can’t wait for this adventure! Thanks for your story, Ophelia.
We are taking the Panama Canal Cruise leaving LA on September 24th. This will be our 12th Princess Cruise. We had three different trips on the Canal. (1) Entered, got on a smaller boat and went through to the Pacific side and returned to the ship later that evening. Our ship turned around in the middle and we went back to meet it. The 2nd was up S. America and we took a train ride along side the Canal. This one we are anticipating with great excitement. We had to cancel our original cruise in April when my husband had emergency surgery and feel fortunate that we were able to get the accomodations we wanted and this trip has one extra port. We love anything Princess and have already planned the South Pacific for this coming March. Princess knows how to make all destinations absolutely fantastic.
I was so happy to read about your trip. We are booked in Feb., Ft. Lauderdale to L.A. ,for my husband’s 60th birthday. We love princess and know we will love this cruise.
Our family is looking forward with great expectation to our Oct. 25th cruise on the Coral from LA to Ft. Lauderdale!
We leave Sept 25 on the Island Princess from Los Angeles to Ft Lauderdale. This is #1 on my Bucket List and after reading Ophelia’s description and the replies, I’m ready to go!!
My wife of 51 years and I will board the ISLAND PRINCESS in Los Angeles on Sept. 25 for 15 days thru the Canal to Ft Lauderdale. This is #1 on my bucket list and reading Ophelia’s comments and the replies have heightened my anticipation of this cruise.
Ophelia, you are so lucky to be on one of the crusies that stop at San Blas Island. We have cruised with princess 10 times and have also cruised with Royal Caribbean , Carnival and Norwigian but we like Princes the best. we have went through the Panama 2 times from the East and now we are scheduled for a Sept. 25th cruise form West to East on Island Princess, but once again we are not stoping at San Blas Island, well maybe next time and again we are hoping it is our best cruise as we are going with Sister and Brother-inlaw it is a birthday cruise(for two of us). I am sure our next will be with Princess also.
I enjoyed reading what you wrote.
My husband and I traveled through half the canel several years ago and said we would return to go through thr entire canel and we are booked for Jan 2012 on the Coral Princess for just that trip. I am sure we will be as pleased as we were the first time.
Thank you for sharing.
Just HAD to read all your comments. I too have fantastic memories of 25 night Panama cruise October 2010. Panama City is truly magnificent too and anchored waiting to transit the canal, with all the other ships around, is like holding your breath for…………the experience!
Ophelia, your story brought back many memories for me of our 18-day cruise on the older Island Princess from LA to FTL back in the 1980′s. Because it was a holiday cruise there were many extras to enjoy onboard as we cruised along the coast of the US and Mexico before arriving at the Pacific entrance to the Panama Canal early one morning. As an avid photographer I was out on deck early to snap a lot of great photos. I dashed from one side to the other, and bow to stern to get the best shots. By the time we reached the middle of Gatun Lake I was pooped! We had lunch on deck so as not to miss anything! By late afternoon we were once again passing thru the locks into the Atlantic. All in all it was a teriffic cruise with so much to see and do, and of course Princess made it one of the best ever! Everyone should do this cruise (on Princess!) at least once in their lifetime!
My husband and I wil be traveling with my brother in law and sister in law on the island
princess panama canal trip on dec. 9th, leaving from ft. lauderdale. This will be our 11th.
princess cruise. We love this cruise line.We are very excited about this trip, as this is our
first trip going to the canal.
My husband and I will be leaving on the Princess Cruise Line also on Dec 9, 2011. We are very excited to be able to see the Panama canal. My husband has been wanting to see it for a while now. We always love the Princes Crusie Line. Everyone is so nice and very organized, and helpful. In our opion it is the best one. Looking forward for our December cruise….
My wife and I are also booked on the Dec. 9 Island Princess cruise. Connie, I’m glad to see there are other passengers on the ship; I didn’t really think the ship would be empty. We’ve sailed with Princess before and it’s one of the best cruise lines. We’re celebrating our 50th anniversary (it’s really in June 2012, but I prefer winter cruises) and I’ve always yearned to see the Panama Canal. Pretty soon I’ll be counting the days till we leave. See you on deck!!
Add four more to the Island Princess Dec 9th cruise! My husband and I will be traveling with our son and daughter-in-law, and we are looking forward to the December cruise. This will be our 6th cruise with Princess. We’ve sailed twice with RCI. We will be celebrating our 40th wedding anniversary and our son’s birthday on the cruise.
I am book to sail on the Island Princess on 19 November and iam looking forward to having a
great time sailing the canal.
Desmond.
What a great story — We went through 3 years ago. Arriving at the canal at dawn was wonderful and I loved the mechanics of the trip.. we were in the dining room for lunch with the sun shining and by the time we had desert — we were surrounded by cement.. I went up to the top deck to watch a hugh container ship beside us go up as we went down.. I would love to do it again! All the way through next time.
Ophelia, A wonderful story of your earlier travels, excitement about visiting the Panama Canal and then a moment of pause for the children of nearby San Blas. Your personal narrative runs through the piece like a string of pearls, tying together little bits and pieces of your own life as a child in Trinidad. You’ve described a very special place that obviously had a huge impact on your husband and you. I hope your future travels include Panama.
I transitted the Panama Canal in 1963 as a Steward on the SS Oronsay. I have never forgotten it and am delighted to be taking my wife through part of it on Island Princess later this year. Ships and their working practices have changed a bit since my time “below decks”!
My husband and I along with friends will be traveling the Panama leaving out of Ft. Lauderdale to LA in November of this year. This will be all of our first time to experience this exciting adventure. My husband and I have done the Alaska cruise twice and I understand from what everyone has said we are really in for a great experience. The counter is on and we are so excited. Thanks for all the comments.
My husband and I sailed from LA to FLL on the Coral Princess in Nov., 2009. Since we have been fortunate enough to sail a river cruise on the Rhine and a barge cruise in France, we were very familiar with the way locks work. But the size of the locks, the sizes of the ships put this in a very different category. I guess that I have to rate this cruise right up there with Alaska.
Because my husband is a model railroader, we took the excursion along the Canal on the Panama Railroad. That was really neat! We also watched James McCullough’s show that was presented on the in room video and read his book, “The Path Between the Seas”. So much work to get this Canal functioning. The Canal is a very interesting trip and a piece of our history that actually still works. We can be proud of our nation for making this work.
Opehlia, that takes me back to March 2000 for my 40th birthday, my husband, 2 children and I took a cruise that included Panama and San Blas Islands (all be it with a different cruise line), but I remember being absolutely bowled over by the sights and sounds of the passage into the Gatun lake and the commentary of the lecturer on board that day, deffinitely a trip to be repeated, it was fascinating and a time we will never forget. The people of San Blas were extremely friendly and I remember everything was $1, they took us in a dugout log canoe to another of the islands to snorkel which was absolutely beautiful. Thanks for the memories. Barbara
I am so pleased with all your positive comments on the Panama Canal cruise. My partner and I will be joining Princess in Vancouver to Fort Lauderdale September 2012 – it can’t come quickly enough!
We are flying to L A april next year to join the Coral Princess to do a back to back cruise through the Panama Canal something we have always wanted to do your story Ophelia and the description of your experinced we just cant wait thankyou for such an interesting story
Thank you for the timely post. My husband and i will see this in October and I just downloaded a book written by another Princess employee, Richard Detrich, to start getting some flavor about the process. My husband is also an engineer so we ought to both be thrilled!
When I read Ophelia’s story about her cruise to the Panama Canal, I knew exactly how she felt. My husband had always wanted to see the Panama Canal and shortly before I started working here at Princess, we took that same 10-day cruise. At first, I wasn’t particularly excited about the destination; I was just happy to go cruising. But once I actually saw it, right in front of my eyes, I knew that I was experiencing “living history”. It’s hard to put into words, although Ophelia did a fantastic job of it. The Panama Canal was truly awe-inspiring and I can’t wait to go back and see it again.
This blognote of Ophelia’s is especially meaningful as a Seattle Direct agent–she is one agent in the Santa Clarita office we all know and often have had occasion with which to interact as she is the person we talk to in booking cruises for ourselves. We love you O!! And I agree, seeing the world beyond the world we knew as a children–through different eyes–is very revealing.
The Panama Canal is one of the trips that my wife and I are planning to make. I was stationed at the Atlantic entrance to the canal from 1969-71 and saw the lock gates you talk about many times and have also seen Gatun lake but have never taken a ship into or through the canal and plan to go and see how it has changed and at long last go into the canal.
As one of the places we have not cruised to this is definitely on our bucket list. You words make everything so real.!!! Thanks for sharing this we us
Fabulous story Ophelia – especially the connection between you and the children of San Blas! I too am placing this cruise on my bucket list. Thanks for sharing.
Looking forward to this cruise on October 10, 2011!!!!!
Wow!! You have left an imprint on our hearts with this wonderful description of the Panama Canal. Yes it’s definitely one of the long awaiting cruises we will have to take as a family. Excellent job on all the details! You’re truly the best travel agent I ever had and thank you for making all our cruise experience such a wonderful and satisfying. Princess is the best!!
We have done the Panama cruise 3 times-it is truly our favorite! As a TA, I continually expound on the fabulous experience. Our last trip was on the Island Princess and truly the best.
Yes, it is an amazing experience.

Ophelia, Patti and I have been through the Panama Canal 2 times because it was so much fun. I remember The San Blas Islands, your story really took me back
Thank You
Chris
Ophelia, I remember I was also in awe when I went thru the Panama Canal. We did not make a stop in San Blas, but hearing about your story really hits home. Thanks for sharing.
That was such an excellent description of your Panama Canal experience. I feel like I was traveling with you. Panama Canal is definitely at the top of my bucket list.
