Homeward Bound – Aloha Style

The Hawaiian Islands
May 10, 2011
As we walked up to the Missouri, I was overtaken with a sense of pride for not only my father but for the countless sailors who devoted so much of their lives to this incredible battleship.
Homeward Bound – Aloha Style Here's my family - my wife, Kristi, and sons, John (left) and Michael (playing with his shark tooth necklace instead of looking at the camera), overlooking Waimea Canyon, truly one of the most spectacular places on earth.

A trip to Hawaii is always a sort of homecoming for me. Although I’ve lived in Los Angeles for 20 years now, Hawaii was the place of my birth (and yes, I have the birth certificate to prove it!). If you’ve ever flown into Honolulu and looked up to the hillside to see an ugly pink building reminiscent of a resort trapped in a bad time warp, that’s the site of my birth: Tripler Army Medical Center.

Living in Hawaii for the first seven years of my life was (particularly in hindsight) a gift from the heavens. My father was in the US Navy and worked on diesel submarines, thus we lived in Navy housing with Pearl Harbor as our backyard. Although my youth has long since drifted away, I still have glorious memories of my formative years, most of which I recall spent at the beach or climbing the banyan tree in our front yard. I guess it was the thing to do, but my sister and I didn’t exactly have Nintendo or Facebook to keep us otherwise occupied. Just running around in the tropical heat, watching our dog chase after the family of mongoose that had built a labyrinth of tunnels in our yard, was good enough for us.

Anyway, back to my homecoming trip. My wife, Kristi, and I love to travel and the thrill of scuba diving has taken us to exotic locales such as Australia, Fiji, Tahiti, Palau, Yap and the Galapagos Islands…just to name a few.  Then, one of both of us decided it would be a great idea to have a kid.  That singular noun turned to plural when we ended up with twin boys. Our days of jet-setting around the world were soon over, but we looked forward to the time when our boys (John & Michael) would grow old enough so that we could return to our exploratory ways.

Working for a great company like Princess, I’ve been able to travel all over the world.  Through the years, Kristi and I have enjoyed nearly ten cruises together, but all were without kids. To see if our boys would like cruising and the open ocean, we decided on a 7-day Caribbean cruise on the Crown Princess in early 2010 to test the water. In the end, our boys loved the youth center, the abundance of pizza, cheese burgers and french fries, and honestly enjoyed the movement of the ship in heavy seas. While some passengers popped Dramamine, ours squealed with delight. I guess it’s in their blood, but more of that later.

A common view for us on our trip. Open ocean, sunny skies, fresh air. The polar opposite of Los Angeles.

We greatly anticipated our next voyage in Spring 2011, this time on the Sapphire Princess to Hawaii. A 14-day cruise with 8 days at sea sounded to some of our friends as “too much time at sea,” but we looked forward to it because we could check our kids into the youth center and do something most parents of young children have forgotten even exists. The art of doing nothing. Take a nap? You bet. Read a book without a Matchbox car flying in from left field and whacking you in the temple? Absolutely. Go to the spa and let a highly trained therapist melt your tensions away? Well, I encourage everyone reading this blog to do just that during your next cruise, but as I’m responsible for running the spa operations for Princess I may have a biased opinion.

Ok, I promise I’m getting to this homecoming. Hawaii here we come. Just me, Kristi, John and Michael…and ten suitcases filled with every piece of clothing we own, plus I swear some of our neighbor’s just for good measure. Honestly, you would have thought we were escaping from an evil dictator and moving to a new country in the middle of the night, but at least we were prepared.

It’s hard to ignore the impact of the military when you’re going to Hawaii, at least for me. As the son of a career Naval Officer, it’s even harder to ignore the obvious historical references. Although Pearl Harbor was a playground for a young kid who didn’t know any better, I quickly learned about the thousands of lives lost and the role the attack would have in catapulting a reluctant nation headfirst into war with Japan and Germany. In addition to the Arizona Memorial, we would have the opportunity to tour the Battleship Missouri (BB-63) which hosted the Japanese surrender in September 1945. Although the Arizona and Missouri respectively signified the beginning and the end of WWII for the United States, I was looking forward to touring the Missouri with my young sons to show them what their grandfather used to do for a living. The last time I had been on the Missouri was back in 1990 during my father’s change of command ceremony. He served as Missouri’s Captain for two years and then retired from the Navy to pursue a career in the private sector. As fate would have it, cancer took my dad’s life in 2001 (at the ridiculously young age of 57) so he wasn’t available to offer his grandsons a private tour, let alone meet them. As any sailor (or son of one) quickly learns, you make do with what you have at your disposal.

Captain John J. Chernesky on the bridge wing of Battleship Missouri. He always used to say, "It's a tough job, but somebody has to do it."

From our balcony overlooking Los Angeles harbor as we sailed away, the SS Lane Victory bid us a fond farewell. This refurbished merchant marine vessel (which served in WWII, the Korean War and Vietnam) would serve as a fitting bookend to our cruise.

Our days at sea flew by and we found ourselves truly relaxing and gaining weight with every meal. There’s something about being on a cruise that shifts our appetites into overdrive. I think it’s a combination of the abundance, the excellence and the service which makes it so appealing. All of that is a polite way of saying I wasn’t ashamed to order three desserts at the end of a four course dinner.

After a great visit to the Big Island, our second port of call would be Honolulu. We met up with my stepmother Melinda (who now lives on Oahu) and embarked on a full day ashore that included a private tour of the Missouri Memorial, thanks to the generosity of Mike Carr (who serves as the president of the Missouri Memorial Association). As we walked up to the Missouri, I was overtaken with a sense of pride for not only my father but for the countless sailors who devoted so much of their lives to this incredible battleship. The fact that it serves as a floating museum rather than sitting in a “mothball” graveyard is a testament to the passion and loyalty of all those who sailed on her. As my father once said, there are only two things that could sink Missouri.   A nuclear warhead…and Congress! Congress managed to do their part and decommissioned the Mighty Mo in 1992, but thankfully it’s back in action…sort of.

Family photo just prior to walking aboard the USS Missouri. We forgot sunglasses for our boys but I didn't forget to wear my Primo beer t-shirt!

As we walked aboard the Missouri, I looked forward to regaling my sons with my own stories of being onboard when my father was in command. In my late teens I had the pleasure of a “tiger cruise” whereby I joined a select group of family and dignitaries as we sailed onboard for three days. I stood on the bridge wing next to my dad when a full broadside was unleashed. Hopefully the picture below does it justice, but there’s no words to describe the sensation of standing amidst the explosion of nine 16″ guns and six 5″ guns as they simultaneously go off. The only thing I can remember about that experience other than my ears ringing was….I’m just glad I’m on this end of the explosion and not the other.

So as we stood on the fo’c'sle deck with the forward turret of 16″ guns pointing ominously towards us, I bent down to tell my two sons how their grandfather was once Captain of this mighty vessel. They responded by asking me for a cereal bar. They were hungry and like any good sailor (or the grandson of one) they wanted some chow.

Our tour of the Missouri was quickly sped up and we visited the Captain’s quarters, right next to the plaque commemorating the Japanese surrender. It hadn’t changed a bit since I last saw it in 1990. In fact, my father’s original Apple Macintosh computer (purchased with his own money since Congress wasn’t about to fund that purchase in 1988!) was still on the desk, a relic from a day gone past. I hope Steve Jobs is reading this. A Mac computer on a Battleship Captain’s desk? Yep. Even a warship has paperwork.

I was trying to take a picture of the Sapphire Princess with Maui in the background and then this attention starved humpback whale just had to get in the shot.

The rest of our trip was simply amazing. We frolicked on the beach at Waikiki, toured Waimea Canyon on Kauai, went whale watching on Maui and then spent four days returning to Los Angeles.

As we disembarked the vessel, sad to leave the newfound friends we made on our cruise (and wishing we could take our room steward Magolino with us), we joined the procession of passengers filing through US Customs & Immigration. Not exactly the highlight of any cruise experience, but a necessity nonetheless. The couple in front of us was elderly, probably in their late 40s. Ok, maybe slightly older. The gentleman was struggling to carry his hand luggage and so I offered to carry it for him. He gave me the once-over, I think to make sure I was up to the task as my hands were already pretty full (see above regarding our own luggage). His stare reminded me of my father’s and I soon realized this gentleman was a veteran of WWII. His straw hat featured several pins identifying him as a retired US Marine, but the Purple Heart really caught my attention. I guess I passed muster as he handed me his luggage and thanked me profusely for helping him out. It was the least I could do.

BB-63 firing a full broadside. It's better to give than to receive!

Great Story John, I was a fellow submariner that was convinced to come to the USS Iowa by your father; he was a great leader and mentor. As a matter of fact he convinced me to stay in the Navy and I did so for 21 years. I was saddened when I heard of his untimely passing and unfortunately was out of reach of the mainland during his funeral at Arlington. He gave me plenty of JJ sea stories to share with all of my shipmates for the rest of my career; one of them involving a “Toucan bird hat” and a giant cigar. What a character! Trust me when I tell you this: they don’t make them like JJ any longer and probably never will. He formed my thinking on leadership and mentoring as a young sailor and it carried me through the next 18 years of my career.

I love reading this. My husband is retired LTC but I was raised as a military brat. Needless to say, I had honeymoon’d in Kauai, Hawaii 15 years ago this coming Jan and my husband surprised saying he wanted to go back again. This time as a XMAS/ anniversary gift to celebrate 15 years with a 2 week cruise with the Golden Princess via LA port departure. Thanks for sharing your memories as we look forward to bringing more memories!

I served under your father on the Missouri, he was my first Commanding Officer. I’ve been in the navy for 24 years now, and the things he said and did have shaped my career, and I’ve tried to pass what I learned from him to the sailors I’ve trained in the years since. He was a great man we all lost too soon.

    • John Chernesky says... April 10, 2012 | 4:54pm

Thanks for your nice post, Wes. I’m sure my father would be proud that you’re still serving in the Navy and keeping the tradition alive. Hope all is well. Aloha.

I have made 28 trips and my husband 23 to the beautiful Hawaiian Islands. We have visited every island and have wonderful stories from each, but never have we cruised to the islands. We are hopeing to cruise in September. We used to watch the cruise ships sail past Maui as we would be on the shore waiting for the sun to set and comment “someday maybe we could do a cruise”. Looking forward to September. We have been 3 times to Alaska and through the Panama Canal, done quick trip to Ensenada and 2 time to Mexico. This trip will be the best because of the beauty of the land and of course the people and their history.

The best of cruising a trip down memory lane. I also visited Oahu and other Hawaiian islands in the early 70′s and 90′s. I also had the experience of bringing my past with me but I’m from the Caribbean. I wonder if that is particular to the islands. My husband and I are returning next spring.

  16. Carole Wood says... October 26, 2011 | 7:32pm

Wow, a 14 day cruise to Hawaii. Lets see, Hawaii or Alaska. We have very dear friends in Hawaii, but I think we would still choose Alaska. But we’d take what ever they offered.
I think we like Alaska because it is the last ‘wild’ place. I’ve been to Hawaii (I was 15), but neither of us has been to Alaska. I’ve been on Princess Lines, Norwegian, and Holland America Line…… Princess is the BEST.

We are contemplating taking the 14 day cruise to Hawaii which leaves from Los Angeles. My concern is the 4 day sailing to and from Hawaii. Are the water calm like the Caribbean or are they rough? My husband will not sail to Bermuda from New York as we have been told the waters are rough. Any info on the Pacific waters will be appreciated.

    • Lori Sharp says... October 8, 2011 | 11:39am

We went on a Hawaii cruise in May-another cruise line and not also to Tahiti–but the water was very calm, and I have seasick tendencies but had no problem at all( in May, and the boat went from HI to HI-not LA and not Tahiti). We had balcony room above sea. Maybe that helps you I hope in your research

Anyone else going on the October 22,11 28 day cruise on Sapphire Princess? We’re SO ready to go NOW! Except for planning what we want to see on each Island. We like to check out some places on our own if town is small enough. BUT some things have to have transportation/guides. So, we’re trying to compare the ship excursions $$ vs booking a van and sharing expenses with a more personal experience. Appreciate any input on worhwhile tours you HAVE taken and if you’d like to share booking local and sharing. Appreciate any and all ideas to make this THE dream trip! Thanks!

John…your last name caught my eye. I can relate to almost every element of your story and believe I knew you dad. A ’64 USNA grad, I spent 28 years in the submarine force and commanded 2 nuclear subs. My wife and I have 6 children and 12 grandchildren. Two of our sons are Navy vets as well, one who recently retired as an O5 and the other who is still in the service as an O4. It’s too bad your dad passed when he did as we have thoroughly enjoyed watching our kids mature into adults and the wonders of grandkids; everyone should live to see that! Keep your dad’s spirit and the Navy spirit alive and well! It’s helped make our country what it is today and will help us weather any storm!

I’ve cruised around the islands twice, and reading your column makes me yearn to do it yet again. There is no place on earth like Hawaii. My son and his wife were married on Magic Island with Diamond Head in the background. Anyone visiting Oahu should really climb to the top of that beautiful mountain just to see the vista before them. The beauty, the people and their laid back ways and hospitality. I can’t say enough about my absolute favorite place to visit. And the feeling of pride that you feel when you see the Arizona memorial and museum, just makes you glad that you are an American. And I thank you John, for taking me back there in your wonderful descriptive manner. Barbie

We went on the round trip Hawaii cruise twice — on the Island Princess in 2005 and on the Golden Princess in 2010 — and can recommend this cruise enthusiastically. The onboard experience on the Golden Princess has to be unique for any cruiseship as the activities, much of the music and some of the entrees on the menus are Hawaiian-inspired. You can’t help but know you’re on your way to Hawaii on the Golden.

When I was young I begged my mother to send me to military school, until as a teenager my Uncle Joe told us the story of being torpedoed in the Pacific by a Japanese sub and even thought my local Congressman arranged for an appointment to a local private school for boys that their fathers died when they were young, which my Dad passed away Christmas eve 1952 at my age of 7, I passed up this opportunity to stay with my Mom and also an appointment to West Point to join the Navy at 17 years old because when you spend 3days and nights in the Shark invested waters you just got to be one of the bravest on Earth and to survive and make sure your buddies do is awesome. I plan a trip for my wife and I to Hawaii in April of 2012 on board the Sapphire Pricess and just can not wait.

Loved reading your story. The Marine Corps gave me a 3 yr. honeymoon in Hawaii after our marriage in 1959. That was before there were any hotels at the base of Diamondhead and there were open lei stands at Aloha Tower. We lived on the mountain above the Headquarters of the Pacific which was Eva (west) of the pink building you were born in. Our daily view was of Pearl Harbor & Ford Island. Our sons were born at Kaiser Hospital on Waikiki, next to the Hawaiian Village (the 1st was born the day we moved into our quarters) due to Tripler’s maternity ward reaching their capacity for the months of their birth. 52 years later, we still are close friends with several Chinese Kamaiiana families– one of the children is my godchild. In fact, one family had a 45th anniversary party at Waialea CC for us when we returned in 2004. We have since returned for our 50th. While living there, we both received our Master Degrees in Education at Jackson College, (now absorbed by the Hawaii Pacific College). Before sailing away on the Matsonia, we bought Henry J. Kaiser’s Lincoln Continental Mark IV and shipped it back to Calif. One sight not to be missed is the climb up Diamond Head and looking back over Waikiki & beyond. Another is a day at College of the Pacific to see all the cultures of the Pacific Islands. My husband & I have learned all these dances and have performed Polynesian dances at military bases and parties ever since. We will be on the Emerald Princess in Sept. Wrong part of the world or I would dance the Hawaiian Wedding Song for you.

Aloha John and thank you for the nice article on your families Hawaii trip. I am part hawaiian, born and raised on Oahu, my mother witnessed the bombing of Pearl Harbor from her home on Alewa Heights and my husband’s grandfather was Chief Naval Architect and built much of Hickam and Wheeler prior to the bombing, so he was driving in during the bombing to direct services to the safest buildings. We treasure Pearl Harbor, Mike Carr has done a great job with the Missouri Fundraising and management, and I love the picture of your dad in his chair. My family has enjoyed many Princess cruises with our kids, and on the Panama Canal cruise my husband and I spent alot of time in the kids room with the staff, and had a great time. Princess has the best kids cruise staff! I hope lots of folks come visit us here, E Komo Mai! Come, and be welcome….

In response to the comment, “it is the Good Old USA!”
Agreed, it is convenient to still be in the US and not deal with customs, etc…BUT what many tourists to Hawaii don’t know is how it came to be a US territory and then state. Unfortunately, the story is much like that of native Americans in the 1800′s. Hawaii was taken without bloodshed, but it was taken. Even President Cleveland opposed the annexation. Read about it here:
    http://www.civics-online.org/library/formatted/texts/hawaii_cleve.html
I love to visit Hawaii also, but I wish more visitors were knowledgeable about its history. The Hawaiians are still trying to pass a bill in Congress to attain self governance similar to that of Native American “Indian” reservations. There is hope that it may come to pass with President Obama in the Oval Office.
Mahalo for reading my post. Please share this information with all other lovers of Hawaii.

Hello John: What a wonderful story and your remenience of going back to Hawaii. My wife and I celebrated our 50th Wedding Anniversary in October 2010 with our two sons and family. We enjoy visiting Hawaii so much, that we are booked on another cruise to Hawaii in November 2011. We have visited many places in our time (22 cruises with Princess) and numerous land trips on our own and we have yet to find a place like the Hawaiian Islands. They are the most relaxing and enjoyable place to visit, just wish we could afford a place to live there.
Again, John, thank you for the wonderful story that made our day complete.

    Dear John & Family:
Your story brought tears to my eyes. Although I was a So Cal girl, I’ve always wanted to go to Hawaii. We are saving our $$ for the trip. Not easy on Social Security. My husband and I are actors and hope we land something bigger so we can make it there. Your writing is exemplary. You really made us want to go all the more. Having a combined family of 11 kids, 42 grandkids, 16 great grandkids, etc. we know about families. Yours sounds delightful. Blessings to all of you. Juli

    Dear John,
What a wonderful story, and yes, you are quite the writer. You emmerse your readers, and take them along to this beautiful island. I have been the owner of a travel agency for the past 17 years, and Hawaii is my favorite destination. Being born and raised in southern calif, I visited Oahu where my Uncle and Aunt lived and were school teachers. He would take me to Hanauma bay, before the tourists arrived, to swim in the aquarium of fish, along with experiencing the “toilet bowl”. I met my husband in San Diego where he was in the Navy, and was leaving for his second tour of Vietnam. We got married (June 11, 1966) before he left on this tour, and when he got to Honolulu and called me to tell me he was extended, for three more months. Since we never had a honeymoon, I cried, and said that we would be able to look forward to this in the future. Well, many years later (1978) my husband had a business trip to Korea, and I had the pleasure of going with him. We finally got our Honeymoon in Hawaii on our return. It happened to be June 11, and my Uncle’s birthday was on June 12, so we met with him, and told him we wanted to take him and my Aunt to dinner, at his selection of a restaurant…..Well, when we pulled up to this restaurant (Monkey Bar in Pearl Harbor), my husband said,”Oh, my, this is the restaurant I called you from , to tell you I had been extended back in June 1966) We will never forget this coincidence??
I have had the opportunity to visit the islands over the years, and take groups on the cruises, which are the best way of seeing the 4 major islands, in one trip. No packing and unpacking and the cruise lines offer the best of tours in these quite unique destinations.
There is something spiritual about these beautiful islands, and the people are so very friendly and hospitable. I always throw my lei out into the ocean, and it always returns to me, letting me know that I too will return…
    Aloha and Mahalo,

Aloha John, I enjoyed your message. We lived in Honolulu 25 years and I left my heart there when we moved to the mainland.
Your story makes me miss Honolulu more. We have been to all the islands (except Niihau) many times. Glad you were able to go back. Sapphire Princess is a magnificent ship. We sailed the Alaska Cruise on her. Aloha and mahalo nui loa for your story. Blanche

Your story brought back wonderful memories, and the pictures are awesome! We took a Holland cruise in Dec. of 2009, and got to see Waimea Canyon, Honolulu (and the pink hospital on the hillside), and rode the public bus downtown and back and met wonderful people who gave us directions and sent us on our way with a warm, friendly feeling. We also got to see the lava flow from the ship, and a couple of whales, too much to list, but we can’t wait to go back. One thing so nice, it is the Good Old USA!

Oh John, You do spin a wonderful story! My husband and I just returned from Hawaii (Kauai). We flew over and back but it was by far (for me) the most beautiful place I’ve been so far. Although I have always had a desire to go on a cruise, I haven’t (yet) but you make me want to even more. Thank you for sharing some of your history and experiences. Blessings to you and yours, Judy

Dear John, what a great read – I especially loved your stories of the past, remembering your childhood days in Hawaii and your memories of your Dad. You are a born story teller and I believe you would be successful in that field if you decide to hang up your cruise work hat in future. Now my husband and I planning to book a cruise to Hawaii after we’ve finished with our vacation in the US in 2012, then fly back home to Sydney Australia. So looking forward to our trip, thanks to you! All the best, Marissa
