The Most Wondrous Wall of All

Beijing, China
January 18, 2011
What followed was an adventure that literally immersed me in a world completely different from any to which I was accustomed.
The Most Wondrous Wall of All

The Great Wall of China dates back more than 2,000 years.

It may seem strange, but the travel experience that moved me the most happened not while I was doing my job – but while I was doing someone else’s.  Let me explain….

I arrived in Xingang, China, in late 1992, while working onboard the original Pacific Princess, the cruise ship you may remember as the original “Love Boat” from television. My position at the time was Food and Beverage Director, a role focused entirely on the galley and food preparation areas.

Our China itineraries have changed a bit, but back then we would arrive in the port of Xingang midway through a cruise and would escort passengers to Beijing for a two-day overland trip.

Hmm… here we were in one of the world’s most renowned destinations, and home to one of the most fascinating landmarks I could think of … so guess who was first in line to offer his services as an escort!   On small ships in those days the captain held sway on whether I could leave my post for this adventure and it was no easy task to convince him that my expertise was needed more in a city completely foreign to me than in the food and provision areas of the ship.  Oh, the power of persuasion!

What followed was an adventure that literally immersed me in a world completely different from any to which I was accustomed.

Our trip started off with a bit of excitement.  It had been a long time since such a large group of visitors had come to the area by sea, so the government chose to honor us with a police escort.  The drive to Beijing took about two hours, and we arrived mid-morning.

The Forbidden City, the imperial palace that served as home to emperors for nearly 500 years.

The first stop was Tiananmen Square which stands adjacent to the world’s largest surviving palace complex, the Forbidden City.  The largest public square in the world, Tiananmen serves as a massive meeting place, and was designed to hold one million people. It wasn’t always quite as big as it was during our visit, though. In fact the square was built in 1651 but quadrupled in size during the 1950s. As we stood taking it all in, the place bustled with throngs of local citizens, but also visiting tourists like us. With my “ping pong paddle” held high above my head to keep my charges from losing sight of me, I navigated the square, passing vendors, performers and other local entertainers as I went.  My irreverent mind couldn’t help but draw comparisons between that part of the square and Venice, California — though in place of Venice’s weightlifters, here we had a bevy of martial arts performers.  But atmosphere grew more sober as we reached the Mao Mausoleum at the far end of the square.

Nearby we entered the secretive-sounding Forbidden City, the imperial palace that served as home to emperors for nearly 500 years.  Although it’s now a museum and hasn’t housed a royal family in nearly a century, we could easily feel the grandeur of this huge palace complex.  Although certainly not forbidden anymore, the deep moat and 10-meter high wall surrounding the city may have given rise to its name.

The Great Walls spans 5,500 miles.

Then we headed out – about 45 miles from the city – for the main event.  The name really says it all – The Great Wall.  It’s the single most iconic site in Asia, and just “great” doesn’t really do it justice.   The Chinese actually call it the “Long Wall of Ten Thousand Li,” and it stretches an amazing 5,500 miles, with beginnings dating back more than 2,000 years.  The wall was a unique linking of local fortifications all designed to keep out the barbarians from the north.  But today the hordes come mostly from the south – tourists arriving from Beijing – drawn by its architectural grandeur and historic importance.

In pictures, the wall always looks like a single entity, snaking like a gigantic dragon over hills and through valleys in one long piece. But really it’s a collection of sections built during different eras, across several states, with various types of construction.  In the 2nd century BC an emperor began to link up many of these sections, but it wasn’t until the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644) that the Great Wall fully earned its western name by becoming the world’s largest military structure.  However, once China’s boarders extended beyond the wall it wasn’t needed for defense anymore, so construction and repair on the wall ceased.

One of the many steep inclines on the Wall.

Today some of these sections are in better shape than others, but the differences are considered important as they illustrate not only how defense techniques advanced over time but also how the Chinese adapted to changing political realities.  The wall was recently chosen as one of the new Seven Wonders of the World and is designated a UNESCO World Heritage site.

Much of this was explained to us on the drive out there, but my first reaction on seeing the formidable stone walls and imposing towers was less about the historic and architectural significance and more simply … “WOW!”

We climbed up to the main entry and arrived atop the wall.  Do we go right or left?  Well some people went both ways.  I stood and admired the view and felt the wind whipping along the wall.  You could see the wall twisting and turning up and down the hill. We turned to the left and walked along the ramparts, climbing higher and further from the hub of activity.  The stones under our feet seemed to run on forever, without end in sight.  We certainly didn’t walk anything close to the full 5,500 miles, but I felt we covered quite a bit of the wall.

At one point I bent down to collect a bit of stone that had become dislodged from the wall.  I carried it carefully the rest of the day, and now it sits in my home as my most-treasured travel souvenir.

Later, as we were sitting, blissfully exhausted, high up where tourists were fewer, we noticed a collection of local children escorted by their teachers.  They couldn’t hide their curiosity and eventually, after some lingering at the edges of our party and giggling amongst themselves, three of them came running to a young lady in our group. The kids were clearly intrigued by her blonde hair, and they hesitantly started running their fingers through her locks.  They giggled louder and louder, and soon we were giggling too.  I wondered how many in our group realized that most likely this was the first time in their lives these kids had ever seen a person with blonde hair.

A guard tower along the Great Wall.

My journey to Beijing was before the age of digital cameras, so I don’t have pictures from this trip flashing on my computer screen throughout the day.  But I can replay them in my mind.  And my clearest pictures of this adventure are those that weren’t captured on film, but taken with just a beat of my eyelashes.  In these memories the color never fades … I see a man on his rickety bicycle, carrying more cargo than a pick-up truck; a sunset behind the buildings of the Forbidden Palace; and a boy atop the greatest wall of all —  with his hands full of blonde hair.  … And it makes me giggle every time.

We are taking our first cruise with Diamond Princess – flying to Bejiing . It is a whole new experience to celebrate our ruby wedding and up to now feeling that there is a lot to learn!
Our hotel for 3 nights before the ship departs is somewhere in Bejiing but only now realising this is not like being in Southampton!
so any help in getting to grips with it would be welcome. We are staying in 1 Chong Wen Men Xi Da Jie
    100005 BEIJING
    CHINA
How far is that away from the Port? any idea?

Is the Marriott City Wall hotel in Beijing the hotel that Princess Cruises use for their passengers who take land tours before a cruise embarks? Are there other hotels you use? If we cannot make advance reservations for excursions before a cruise, how can we find out what tours are available? We have been on a number of cruises, but these pre cruise excursions don’t seem to show up on the websites we are reading.
We find out about these trips from fellow passengers after we arrive at the embarkation port.

In Beijing, the hotels that we offer cruise plus hotel packages are the Marriott City Wall hotel and the Doubletree Hilton. However, we offer a cruise plus hotel package including tours at the Marriott City Wall hotel (for more information: http://bit.ly/wBxJvG). We do offer embarkation shore excursions for those passengers who do not book the Marriot City Wall hotel including tours package. However, these excursions are not available for advance reservation. The tours can be purchased at the Princess Hospitality Desk in the hotel. For more information on the tours which will be available please speak to the Princess Hospitality Desk.

I went in to complete my entry via the additional entry question and when I answered the question and clicked on “next” it kept coming back and I could not submit or get out of it. I certainly hope my entry got submitted, even though I know the chances off winning such would be astronomical!

I have heard nohing but good reports from friends and relatives who have cruised with you. My younger sister went to Alaska earlier this year via princess cruises and she gave raving reviews of everyhing for the entire week she was on tour. I have never been on a cruise, or much of anywhere else for that matter, as my husband and I have been caregivers to family members wh have lived with us for the past 26 years and we still have my mother-in-law who will be 91 in January; she has Alzheimer’s disease. We took care of my aunt for 25 years who also was mildly retarded since birth, having the menetality of an 8-year-old all her life, as well as a plethora of other entities, including Alzheimer’s Disease. I had both my aunt and my mother-in-law for a period of 4-5 years together, but my aunt passed away last year at 90. My mother-in-law has lived with us now for 7 years and we have been so restricted as she does not like “strangers in the house” so we can’t even pay a nurse to watch her for a few days so we can have a reprievenot can we travel with her in any form; she fails to realize she has had a full life so please let us enjoy some of ours before it is too late for us . . . we have never had our “empty nest syndrome” and are passionately waiting for this time to come, although we are getting older as well. We would love to celebrate our 50th wedding anniversary by taking a cruise next year (2012) which will also be our first ever cruise, although if we are still caregivers, we may not even be able to celebrate this milestone in our life. However, there is always hope that life will work out towards this goal. I hear the service on your ships is fantastic in every manner and hope to be able to give that same reports to others at some point in time.

I was in Alaska In August of 2009 with my fiance and we enjoyed the trip and the pleasure of the experince of traveling on Princess Cruise Line.I have been on other cruise lines in the past but the way we were treated by everyone in all the departments on the ship surpass anything I have experienced.
I have just expreienced the worst year of my life. I broke of my engagement with my fiance, been suffering with an arthritic hip for almost 10 months and finally had to have it replaced in August. It is now the middle of October and I just completed my re-hab and I really could use a vacation. A cruise would be just the answer I need but right now I can’t afford one. I have’t been able to work for amost 9 months but I want to take my new girl friend on a cruise and winning this trip would be wonderful. Thank you for letting me express the way I feel.

I traveled with Pricess cruises to Alaska about 10 years ago and had a wonderful time. We were treated like royalty by all the staff we met. No other cruise line has compared. After a really hard year with the death of my mom and lossing my job, a vacation would be just what I need. I would love to go to Hawaii or Europe, but would be happy cruising anywhere with Princess Cruises again.

I cruised from New York to Bermuda and the Caribbean on Caribbean Princess in 2010 to celebrate both my daughters’ high school and college graduations. We had a marvelous time! Being able to connect with each other at dinner and sharing the one of a kind excursions have left us with lifelong memories. My son has an unforgettable memory from this trip. He met the woman he is engaged to be married to during the cruise! You see, it really is the “Love Boat”.

A cruise is mydream for a vacation–anywhere. The past several years have been extremely rough. My husband got cancer, then lost his business and job and we have also lost our home. We are presently in a holding pattern. Not the way we wanted to spend our “golden years” We are young 62 and 63 years, love to travel but can not these days. We have cruised Princess in the past and have wonderful memories of those experiences. The care and attention to detail was amazing!! Good luck to everyone!

I started as temporary staff in the your child centers as Jan Humphryes Baldwin in 1989 and “worked 7 cruises” including several Caribbean, Mexican Riviera, and Alaska. My husband Paul knew my enthusiasm for cruising by then, and concluded we go together on the Princess to Alaska, British Isles, & Mexican Riviera several times. He LOVES cruising as much as I do. We almost went to Hawaii on one of your cruises, but in retirement, we moved from CA to SD. Even though he will be 90 in February 2012 and me 87 in 2012, we’re still healthy enough to enjoy another cruise and would lOVE to do at least one more! Hawaii would be our first choice. Neither of us have been to all the islands. He was stationed there in the Navy during the war, and we flew there later and renewed his memories together. So with wishful thinking, we’d love another Princess Cruise. I loved working for you and we feel you’re one of the best!

My Mom, husband and a dear friend enjoyed the Princess cruises. Cannot remember how many we went on, but really not enough. The other 3 have now gone on, but there is one I would love to go on, and that is the China one. When I was 8 years old, I am now 82 years old, my father was in the Navy; so my mother and 3 children headed for China aboard the USS Grant in 1937…my first experience in sailing. I think that really started my love for the ocean. We stayed in a hotel in Shanghai until they evacuated us to a place then called Chefoo. In one of the cities mom & dad went bicycling to the Great Wall of China. I could not go, because I had to stay & take care of my younger sister and brother.
but after hearing the story my parents told us, have always had the desire to see That Great Wall with my own eyes. MyMom said she would like to go back & see it again, so my husband Bob and I had planned to go and take her. He got brain cancer 5 1/2 years ago and went on to a new home. Well, that is my story. It is true, and we left there for the Philippines returning back to the good ole USA in 1940. We returned on the US Charmont not sure about the spelling, but was nothing like your fabulous Princess cruises….not at all. Thought I would like to share my story with you. Shirley Price

As I get to our “twilight years, and our money is going fast, we would love to make a trip to China. We have been on a number of Princess Cruises, and have enjoyed every one.
