I found a warmth in the statue’s embrace that cuts across religious lines.
In the Embrace of Rio’s Most Famous Monument Christ the Redeemer watches over Rio de Janeiro.

They had only recently put finishing touches on the statue when Mavis, my grandmother, made her first visit to the iconic Christ the Redeemer in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil more than 70 years ago.

Mavis was a young Brit, living with her family in the Amazon, where her father was an engineer working on one of the first railroads being constructed in the jungles.  It was on a side trip to Rio that Mavis would marvel at what is now the largest art deco statue in the world – Christ the Redeemer that stands majestically embracing the whole of the city from its grand perch on Corcovado Mountain.

She journeyed up this famed mountain by way of an electric railcar that jerked and jostled its way toward the summit, traveling through a lush rainforest along the way.

As she disembarked from the train, and climbed the many steps to the statue’s base, greeting her with open arms was Christ the Redeemer. And he was not like any depiction of Jesus Mavis had seen before.

To start, he was a bit on the tall side, standing some 130 feet high. Unlike most statues that looked upward and stretched their arms toward the heavens, this Christ looked down toward the city of Rio laid out like a sprawling blanket below him, holding his arms in such a way as if to suggest an embrace. While most were styled in emulation of the great art of centuries past, this statue was strikingly modern, bearing the hallmarks of Art Deco that Mavis knew signified the bold new world that was rapidly blossoming around her.  This depiction of Christ was one that touched Mavis like none before and here he was, greeting her with outstretched arms.

I didn’t hear about my grandmother’s visit to this famous statue until I told her that I was being deployed to South America aboard Pacific Princess.  It dawned on me that I would have the opportunity to trace her footsteps to this world-renowned landmark so many decades after her visit. Our circumstances could hardly be more different. She was barely a teenager on her journey up the mountain, traveling with her family, including several younger siblings for whom she cared. I would have charges of my own, but not children. As a shore excursions manager for Princess Cruises at the time, I shepherded groups of passengers to attractions at many ports of call.

When the time came to make my own journey up Corcovado Mountain, my Princess companions and I traveled by rail just as Mavis had.  The day was sultry, and I was feeling fortunate for the wicking effect of my cotton T-shirt. Atop the mountain, I had read, I’d be at 2,400 feet, and a lot of what lay below was ocean. Surely I could expect to catch a cooling breeze.

If the images of the statue that pervade popular culture had prepared me for my encounter with this great monolith, nothing had prepared me for the view. The day was clear, and the city of Rio de Janeiro made a glorious display, stretched out in all directions with ocean beyond, spanning to infinity. My grandmother had described the place in great detail, including the chapel in the statue’s pedestal, which can hold more than 100 people.   She and I had bonded over a shared love a cobalt blue glass, and she thrilled at the memories of cobalt tiles that lined the chapel.

I walked the perimeter of the statue, taking in the 360-degree view from all angles.  Designed by sculptor Paul Landoviski, and engineered by Heitor da Silva, Christ the Redeemer was 10 years in the making, and completed in 1931. It’s been counted among the new Seven Wonders of the World; I was wondering myself how his creators managed to get all 635 tons of him situated here.

When I came through the chapel entrance, my heart leapt. Inside were the tiles. Blue. A familiar shade of cobalt.  At that moment I felt my grandmother’s presence.  Although she was miles away in my hometown of Reno, Nevada, I had never felt closer to her.

I found a warmth in the statue’s embrace that cuts across religious lines. And for me, that warmth has an additional ounce of meaning. For that statue’s outstretched arms are an enduring remembrance of my grandmother’s embrace.

The long-awaited journey up to Christ the Redeemer.

This may not be the place to ask this queston. But I need to find out about something.
When I got back from my cruise to Panama Canal. There was some pictures that I could not afford before leaving the ship. Cause I had already spent over $300.00 in pictures. I was told I could order the rest I wanted through the cruise line. When I called they told me no. Is this true? I have all the numbers to the pictures. They was from all our stops. I really would like to get them. So is there any possible way I can?

Thanks for your help on this matter…..

      Hello,
Unfortunately, pictures are not retained after the cruise due to storage constraints.

What a great way of putting this article.. I just returned from a cruise on the Coral Princess.
Went to tha Panama Canal for 14 days. It was great. They never seem long enough though.
I have been playing this trivia. It been very rewarding to learn about all the places you can go.
And to read about them. This will make my next cruise harder to pick with Princess. Princess is a great cruise line very pleasant.

Question I have been playing this trivia from day one. And have seen my name on a day.
How do you know if it is you or not? Do they send you am e-mail?

Wow, for some reason this story brought tears to my eyes and I could picture each paragraph as you described it. To view Christ the Redeemer in Rio would be one of the highlights of my life. Thank you so much for sharing with this gg-grandmother.

This contest was the most informational and exciting regarding world geography, I awoke each morning with the thrill of answering the question of the day. I won the daily contest once, and that was very special. My husband and I are leaving on Princess Lines out of San Francisco
on May 13th. Our destination is Alaska. This is my first cruise, and my husbands third to Alaska. We were just married the third of December 2011, this will be our belated honeymoon.

An exciting departure point! BE sure to have your camera ready as you sail OUT, but also be up early with camera when you sail back home under the Golden Gate Bridge! A memorable trip for my wife and I!

This competition has been wonderful – I don’t go to bed until the next day rolls around and I can get my answers off – such wonderful information which I hope I can remember and play for trivia with :) Pls do another one like this sometime soon!! Nancy Anne Lockwood – been reading these msgs and noted you are going to Alaska leaving 13th May from S.F. – by chance is that the Star Princess too Alaska? If so we are all on cruise critics boards getting to know each other-would be a hoot if you were one of those on this wonderful ship!!

My husband and I went on a cruise starting in Rio to Santiago, February 2005. We had two extra days in both cities. It was a dream come true to visit Christ the Redeemer. Our view was also to the famous soccer stadium. The clouds will cloud your view on occasion. The guide didn’t mention that chapel. We arranged this tour while we were in a small group on the way to the hotel. The desription of the Statue is very informative. Thank you!!
We paid $100.00 each for the visa. Buenos Aires feels like a European city and is extreamly interesting. Our liner stayed here two days. We love the Princess Line but they had no cruises from Rio. Our liner also skipped the Falkland because of bad weather condition.

Congratulations, our longest cruice was on Princess Saphire in 2007 (31 days between Sydney and Los Angeles). We actually arrived in Sydney a week early to visit Cairns (Barrier Reef) and then Sydney. You must do it someday, it is only once a year so you need to reserve in advance not to miss it. I can only compare Tahiti, Roratonga, Bora Bora and Morea beaches with Turks and Caicos and Exuma, near where we live at the entrance to the Keys, south of Miami (Homestead), knowhere else.

Now to S.A., it was our first big cruise trip after we retired (2006) and although we chose another cruise ship, I can tell you, you will enjoy it as much on Princess, our favorite cruise line.
Everyplace you will go will be fairly safe, don’t worry. We speak Spanish so it was easier for us.
We started in Valparaiso (actually we stayed in Viña del Mar, close by, be sure to visit it and try the local seafoood (like clams and conch). Ride the cable car in Valparaiso and visit Palacio Vergara. There is also a museum on Eastern Island in the city. We then went to Puerto Mont (my son is Nat. Sales Manager in the US of salmon harvested in Puerto Mont and surroundings). Visit the Petrohue waterfalls, Lago Esmeralda and Volcan Osorno on boat. Chilean fjords and glaciers are beautiful along the channel corridor. Punta Arenas has a pinguin colony and visit Rest. Granaderos to eat lamb like chileans do (on a stick). Ushuia is a beautiful city from the boat. Then Cape Horn (we had a great day) and Fakland (Malvinas) Islands for more pinguins. We visited Puerto Madrin in Patagonia, Argentina (a highlight in our trip, not sure Princess will, a lot of wildlife there). If you can take the trip to Torres del Paine Park, do it is like Glaciar Nat. Park. We did not take the trip to Antartica. We then toured Montevideo and finally Buenos Aires. I wish you have time to see a tango dance in Almagro and visit La Recoleta (cementary) and restaurants around it. Try some of the local sweets with dulce de leche, they are good!! We then flew to Rio (your cruise may visit Rio). Obviously you must go to Pan de Azucar and the Christ Redeemer and if time, the Sambadrome (Carnaval) and the Cathedral. Don’t forget to walk along Copacabana and Ipanema! The beaches are safe now with policemen around. Drink the local Caipiriña and try the black bean soup with a side of brazilian beef.
      Have a wonderful trip!!!!!

    • Bill Larsen says... August 1, 2011 | 9:00am

      David —
My wife and I cruised on the Star Princess for 30 days from Los Angeles (San Pedro) to Rio, departing just before Thanksgiving 2009 and arriving in Rio on December 22, 2009.

First and foremost, get your Brazilian Visa! The Brazilian government makes it difficult and expensive and candidly, given my bad experience with both them and the Visa procurement agency, I don’t think that applying now would be too early. On our cruise, over 100 passengers had to depart the ship in Buenos Aires because they were unable to get them in time! That was the only bad experience from our trip. Btw, the Visa is good for 5 years so if you can plan obtaining it in a timeframe to give you the option of going to Brazil’s hosting of the upcoming Olympics it would be good.

Now for what you really want to know. While you will be told that crime in Rio is rampant in some areas, use common sense. I am a pretty good amateur HD videographer and Nikon still guy. I did not take either of my good cameras up to Sugarloaf because of the warnings. I wish I had as the views from the top of Sugarloaf can be spectacular. So take one really good camera (either your video or high resolution still) up to both Sugarloaf and Mt Corcovado (Christ the Redeemer). Wherever you go (Rio or anywhere), be aware and don’t flaunt your wealth (especially leaving your expensive jewelry and watches back on the ship).

While I am probably the world’s biggest proponent of taking Princess’ tours, you do not have to use them to go to Sugarloaf or Christ the Redeemer (especially comforting since you will be in Rio before the cruise). Since Rio was our last Port, we also did those tours on our own. We found a great Taxi Driver and he was more than excited to be hired by us for a day and a half … and became an excellent (free) tour guide in the process. However you do it, I suggest you take the train up to Christ the Redeemer. It drops you off an escalator ride from the top. And while the weather may be beautiful down on the beaches, there are often clouds surrounding Christ the Redeemer. So take those pictures immediately if it is clear. And it’s hokey, but get one of you with your arms extended like Christ the Redeemer in front of it. All of your friends back home will love it even more than you!

And let me tell you that you will see more HUGE lizards on Sugarloaf than in the “rain forests”.

I’ll save my comments on the other ports. But remember, January in SF is like July in South America. That aside, MAKE SURE to bring your “Nanook of the North” attire for going around Cape Horn and viewing the Amalia Glacier. And also do not miss the even more incredible glaciers between Punta Arenas and Amalia. Since you are cruising from Rio to SF, the best side of the ship is the Starboard (right) side for YOUR trip. Since you have plenty of time between now and it should be very easy to change accommodations to ensure your best views. And having a Balconey stateroom will be so worth it … especially since you will be able to go in and out of your cabin to get warm and/or still see the spectacular glaciers (which for us was at 4AM !!).

Fyi I am also a gadget freak. I always take my GPS with me. And it was lots of fun watching as we approached Punta Arenas to see us first go from the Pacific to the Atlantic, then back to the Pacifc, then back to the Atlantic. I have never enjoyed geography as much as since I have been cruising with Princess … now 14 cruises.

If I had your address I’d send you a DVD of my trip. But whatever you do, for my money Princess is the best value and we have always been delighted by them.

We are taking the 30-day SoAmerica cruise and I wish Princess could put together a pre-cruise package. But if the crime rate in Rio is a factor, I’d be hesitant to take it.

    • Princess Cruises says... July 7, 2011 | 10:18am

      Hi Aida,

We typically do offer hotel packages in Rio de Janeiro (there may be certain factors which cause us not be able to secure hotel space, such as if you are traveling on the 30day cruise during Carnival we are unable to secure hotel space in Rio de Janeiro during this time). Please call your travel agent or 1-800-Princess for more information on our pre-cruise packages.

  19. Lucia P. Suchikul says... June 25, 2011 | 11:27am

My friends and I willl be taking the 30-day South America cruise early next year commencing in Rio de Janeiro. I agree with the comments that Princess should stay an extra day on ports like Rio because there are so many places to see. We are flying to Rio two days before the cruise and it is costing us plenty. Princess has no more pre-cruise package available when I made my inquiry.

By the way, how come Princess does not include Manila, Philippines in their Asian itineraries? I understand there are many interesting places to see in the Philippines.

    • Princess Cruises says... June 29, 2011 | 2:44pm

      Hi Lucia,

Thank you very much for the great feedback. We have included Manila, Philippines in our itineraries. The most recent itinerary which in cluded Manila was the Ocean Princess cruise on December 22, 2010. We currently do not have Manila in any of our itineraries through Spring 2013, but will keep this great port in mind when planning our future cruise itineraries.

  20. Zeny Guerra says... May 13, 2011 | 7:40am

I agree with Miles. Princess Cruises should have more itinerary that would stop in one port for two days or more. Princess has two days in Russia, Israel and Egypt…why not add more days in some popular destinations so we can see more places to go and experience the night life?

    • Princess Cruises says... May 19, 2011 | 1:03pm

      Hi Zeny,
Thank you for your feedback. As you mentioned we do have some ports where we have over nights (Venice, St Petersburg, etc), and we are always interested in our passengers feedback on the itineraries they are interested in.

We do offer Overland Tours where passengers leave the ship and spend multiple days ashore in destinations such as Australia’s legendary Ayers Rock, the magnificent Galapagos Islands and Egypt’s dazzling Pyramids—and rejoin the ship at a later port. For more information on our Overland Tours please visit: http://bit.ly/iTykxZ

I have visited many of the destinations listed in your blog, they are all very interesting and beautiful. I wish Princess would stay a extra day or 2 at many ports. You can not see all the sites at many places and while staying overnight, many cities/attractions look considerably more beautiful lit up at night. Esentially you would have to take 2 cruises instead of one to see a lot more.

    • Princess Cruises says... May 19, 2011 | 1:10pm

      Hi Miles,

We appreciate the time you have taken to share your comments with us. We always want to know the types of itineraries our passengers are interested in!

  22. John Darcy says... April 6, 2011 | 11:07am

We took the world cruise on the Pacific in 2010. It ended in Rome. Princess calls it a “World Cruise”, which it is not. It went from Ft. Laud. to Rome. Why can’t Princess go back to the U.S.?
It would save passengers a lot of trouble and money! As such we were forced(as it were) to go on Holland America which does offer a world, and comes back to the U.S. Princess should call it their three quarter world and be more accurate. A Princess ship could come back to Luaderdale and go directly into the Caribbean sailings run without extra cost!

    • Princess Cruises says... April 8, 2011 | 2:26pm

      Hi John,

We are very sorry that you are unhappy with the 2010 Pacific Princess World Cruise itinerary, but hope there were aspects of your cruise that you did enjoy. Thank you for your feedback as we are always monitoring our passengers’ needs and requests.

Read your article with great interest as our daughter is a member of the fabulous Princess family having been a singer/guest entertainer on various cruises, most recently on the Dawn. She had met her Brazilian boyfriend on one of those cruises and they maintained a long distance relationship for the past one and a half years. He visited us this past summer and she in turn visited with him in January-February 2011. He proposed to her at the base of the Christ the Redeemer statue as he said to her “this will be our blessing by God”. Can there be a more spiritual or romantic setting anywhere on earth?
